If you think about it, the land area set aside for a roadway
is so dominated by its primary function that you hardly consider it as
a space that could be used for other civic activities. On rare occasions
the roadway excludes autos and becomes a giant civic plaza. Street

family.
dances, markets and parades come to mind. In your neighborhood the
street becomes part of your house. Children play with balls and roller blade
seamlessly from driveway to roadway. A few special times per year, though,
the neighborhood gathers on the street in celebration and friendship.
It feels as if all the front yards of the neighborhood merge as a warm, intimate,
outdoor living room—a slightly different feeling than a public plaza or parade.
The block party is about transforming a work-a-day neighborhood space primarily used by autos into an intimate gathering space for friends and family.
