wideopen
The giganitic structures where jumbo jets occasionally take their
pit stops have equally giant access doors. These massive doors somehow seem appropriate for the job given that they are so much larger than
anything human scaled. With their doors open, the structure’s yawning
void seems to beg for attention; for exploration; for filling! We’ve seen those
images of the President speaking to vast groups of people in aircraft hangers—people packed inside and spilling outside onto the tarmac. The inside
and outside become one space and part of the same room. This merger of
spaces becomes greater than the sum of their singular parts. An aircraft
hanger is a utilitarian space that can somehow evoke the character of
a great cathedral—they both open wide and shelter rides to the heavens.
