blend seamlessly or “stand-out” and herald the values of a new generation? Can it do both? For example, if New York’s Central Park were built
today would the park be more naturalistic and therefore “fit-in” if its
boundaries meandered in and around the man-made city grid? Or is the
city more urban with the boundary between the park and city more abrupt
and defined? A key design inspiration for this project located in a mature
suburban neighborhood lay in a sensitive response to the urban “edge”
between the new building and the public domain (street) and the neighboring side
buildings—our idea, urbanize the soft edge and naturalize the urban edge.
