In the tenth video, A Skeleton of
Steel, we examine how steel is used
to complete the structural framework
of the home. This segment offers an
insider’s look at the collaboration
between the wood framing and the
concrete contractors where steel is
bolted to the foundation and wood is
bolted to the steel.
Raw steel plates and beams are hand
fabricated in a metal shop into precise
lengths and shapes, welds fuse
joints and connect small pieces into
detailed “parts” that are assembled
at the project site. Steel that will be
left exposed to the weather is sent to
a galvanizing factory. A large crane
gently helps with the erection of the
framework.
