California Hacienda
“They dreamed of a classic
California hacienda with a
tangled grapevine-trellised entry,
where life moved slowly, and the
past felt beautifully present.”
Inspired by the owners’ visit to Sunset
Magazine’s Menlo Park headquarters, this
project reflects the casual elegance of early
California haciendas. The clients fell in love with
the intimate connection between gardens and
architecture, saying, “It felt like old California—a
hacienda where the gardens seemed connected
to the building from every vantage point.”
Situated on a 5-acre foothill property
surrounded by ranches, vineyards, and groves
of oak trees, the site features a one-acre pond,
distant valley views, and a winding driveway
that culminates in a grand arrival court. A
bougainvillea-covered trellis walk, traditional
wall fountain, and formal gardens with mature
olive trees set the tone for the residence.
The home itself embodies the timeless hacienda
style: expansive patios flow seamlessly from
interior spaces, with tile floors uniting indoor
and outdoor rooms. Overlooking the pond, a
turf area, lap pool, and a firepit create spaces
for reflection and relaxation. Every element
prioritizes livability and ease, while the design
remains rooted in timeless character.
